*A poetry soiree at the Downtown, DC Barnes & Noble Bookstore hosted by Sistah Joy
J. Joy Matthews Alford, poetically known as Sistah Joy, has served as Poet-in Residence at the downtown Barnes & Noble bookstore since August, 2002. She hosts Verse, Vibes, & Bites, a free-to-the-community monthly poetry soiree that includes featured poets and an open mic. The soiree takes place each 3 rd Thursday from 7 until 9 pm at Barnes & Noble Books – Downtown, Washington, DC location, 555 12 th St., NW, (corner of 12 th & E, 1 block from Metro Center). The soiree, which also includes interviews of featured poets, is frequently recorded for subsequent airing on local cable stations to provide added exposure to featured artists. Says Sistah Joy, “The venue is intended to provide support for the arts and for the artists throughout the Washington metropolitan area.”
Verse, Vibes & Bites is a “family-friendly” venue. Poets interested in being featured should email Sistah Joy at Poetsistahjoy@aol.com. To show “support and respect for the venue,” poets must have participated in the “open mic” segment before requesting to be featured at Verse, Vibes & Bites.
Please bring a friend or two, and a poem or two and join us on any 3 rd Thursday!
Doc Powell, Djembe (African drum) drummer extraordinaire, provides accompaniment to Sistah Joy and her guests throughout the Verse, Vibes, & Bites poetry soiree. Creating soothing and spirit-filled sounds on his Djembe, Doc Powell’s enchanting rhythms welcome all “within earshot,” and usher in just the right serenity-inspiring vibe; the perfect complement to thought-provoking spoken word and poetry. He will accompany any poet that requests such during the open mic segment of the evening. If the vibe is right, Doc has also been known to perform solo presentations (vocal and drumming) during the soiree.
